WhatIsHang is a new Nirsoft application that identifies and displays information about hung programs in Windows. The portable program detects software and processes that have stopped working but continue to consume system resources. The software uses a minimal amount of CPU and memory to function and displays its information in an easy-to-read format.

Upon detecting a hung program, WhatIsHang provides detailed information about the problem in the lower pane of its interface. The upper pane is empty until the program is detected and then it shows the name of the software, its window title, the process name, its process ID and thread ID as well as the full path to its executable file.

The report consists of several sections: Execute Address, Stack Data and Modules Found. The first remark always identifies the type of hang problem (like single system/Kernel/API call, infinite loop or recursive calls). The stack data display all values, addresses and string pointers found in the program’s execution stack. The modules found section shows a list of the DLL files that were called by the program to perform its operation. This can be useful in identifying 3-party software that could have caused the problem. Strings found in the call stack are displayed as well and might be useful to help troubleshoot the issue.
